Before you make up your mind to self drive in Burundi and particularly in the capital city of Bujumbura, always first consult your embassy in that country if at all it has one there because not so many countries have embassies in this country. This is all due to the security turmoil that has dwindled this country for so many years. This is evidenced in the fact that even the resident government employees and travelers normally move in convoys.
So when you are going for a self drive holiday in Burundi, its easy to get a driving license in Burundi, and consequently the standard of driving is poor and results in many serious accidents. Roads are average within Bujumbura, though some have large potholes but the main National Routes are in quite good conditions. Other roads away from Bujumbura will be in poor condition and many roads are only passable with a 4WD especially in the rainy season. Fuel is generally imported from Kenya and Tanzania and is consequently quite expensive- this may be something to take into account when planning your trip.
They do not receive very many tourists around the year since they do not have a lot of tourist attractions in relation to its sister East African states.
