Bwindi impenetrable national park
Positioned in the southwestern region of Uganda in Kanungu district, Bwindi Impenetrable national park is part of the thick rainforest of Bwindi Impenetrable forest which is situated along the border of Democratic Republic of Congo near Virunga National park on the edge of the Albertine Rift valley. The park was established in 1991 and it sits on an area of approximately 331 square kilometers. It provides habitat to a variety of species like over 120 mammal species, 348 bird species, 220 butterfly species and a lot of endangered species like gorillas.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is well known for hosting almost half of the world’s population of the endangered mountain gorillas. The park has 19 habituated gorilla families that are open for tourism purposes in four different sectors of Ruhijja, Rushaga, Nkuringo and Buhoma in the districts of Kanungu, Kabale and Kisoro. While on a Uganda safari in Bwindi impenetrable National park, a number of activities can be done including;
Gorilla trekking: This is the most done activities in Bwindi Impenetrable national park. For one to do gorilla trekking, he or she must be having a gorilla permit which costs $700. Gorilla trekking experience involves hiking through the thick rainforests of Bwindi in search of the endangered mountain gorillas with the guidance of the trackers and rangers. Upon finding them, the visitor is allowed to spend some time with the mountain gorillas as they make farther research about them.
Gorilla habituation: In Bwindi, gorilla habituation takes place in the sector of Rushaga. This experience involves hiking through the impenetrable forest with professional researchers while collecting data and learning more about mountain gorillas. Upon finding the gorillas, the tourists are given 4 hours with the gorillas and this experience requires a gorilla habituation permit which costs $1500 for foreign non-residents, $1000 for foreign residents and ugx750,000 for East African citizens.
Other activities in the park include bird watching, safari walking, Batwa cultural experience, mountain biking and others.
Queen Elizabeth National park
Named after the visit of the queen of England – Queen Elizabeth II in 1952, Queen Elizabeth national park is located in the western region of Uganda stretching in the districts of Kamwenge, Kaseese, Rubirizi and Rukungiri. The park is 400 kilometers by road south-west of Uganda capital city – Kampala.
Queen Elizabeth national park covers an area of approximately 1978 square kilometers with numerous crater lakes, woodlands, savannah, animals, bird species and acacia. It is the most visited national park in Uganda and a number of activities can be done while in this place. Among these activities include boat cruise on Kazinga channel. Kazinga channel is a small channel that joins two fresh water bodies of Lake George and Lake Edward. Others are lion tracking, game drives, bird watching, chimpanzee tracking, nature walks, community walks and others.
